Restoring Character: Exterior Painting in Loughton

Loughton is known for its beautiful residential properties, many of which feature traditional timber joinery that adds immense character to the area. However, maintaining these timber elements is a constant commitment. Over time, weather exposure takes its toll, leading to the breakdown of paint systems and the inevitable onset of rot and decay in the woodwork.

We recently completed a full exterior painting and restoration project on a property in Loughton. The exterior joinery was showing significant signs of age, with areas of decayed wood and peeling paintwork that required urgent professional attention. The goal was not just to paint over the problems, but to restore the substrate to a sound condition before applying a finish that would last. 

We believe that the longevity of any exterior job is determined by the preparation work. We started by thoroughly cleaning down the surfaces to remove dirt and surface contaminants. Any loose, flaking, or failing paint was stripped back to expose the sound, bare timber. We then thoroughly abraded the remaining surfaces to create a solid key for the new paint system to adhere to.

Once the timber was exposed, we identified several areas where the wood had rotted. Instead of using standard fillers which can crack and fail, we utilised the Repair Care system. This is a specialist joinery repair method that allows us to remove the rot completely back to sound wood and rebuild the profile.

we moved on to the painting phase using the Dulux Trade 8 Year Weathershield system. We applied a preservative primer to penetrate the wood and protect against future rot. This was followed by the Weathershield undercoat and gloss system.

This system is designed to provide a flexible, breathable barrier against the British weather, offering up to 8 years of protection. The finish is not only durable but also provides a crisp, fresh appearance that highlights the quality of the joinery. Also added to the paint was owatrol paint conditioner which makes the paint more flexible and less susceptible to flaking and peeling.

The property has been completely transformed. The rotten timber has been professionally restored, and the fresh application of the Dulux Weathershield system ensures the home is protected against the elements for years to come. The curb appeal has been massive restored, leaving the property looking immaculate.
