Modernising Hardwood Joinery: Internal Window & patio door Spraying in Woodford

Woodford has a wide variety of properties, many featuring high-quality hardwood joinery. While hardwood like teak is incredibly durable, the dark wood aesthetic can sometimes make a room feel smaller or dated compared to modern interior trends.

We recently completed an internal spraying project in Woodford, transforming a set of hardwood teak windows from their original dark varnish to a crisp, contemporary White Satin finish. The goal was to brighten the space while retaining the high-quality feel of the original joinery.

Teak is a dense, oily hardwood and standard paints often struggle to adhere to it, and the natural oils can bleed through water-based topcoats, causing yellowing. To ensure a flawless, long-lasting finish, the correct specification of primers and preparation was essential.

As with all spraying jobs, the quality of the finish is determined by the preparation. We began by thoroughly degreasing every inch of the teak frames to remove years of built-up dirt, polish, and natural oils. Once clean, the surfaces were comprehensively abraded to create a mechanical key for the paint system to adhere to, using mirka dustless sanding equipment.

To ensure a imperfection free finish, any dents, scratches, or imperfections were filled and sanded flush. We then extensively masked the surrounding areas to protect the room from overspray.

Once the substrate was perfect, we applied Zinsser BIN. This shellac-based primer is the ultimate adhesion primer for difficult surfaces. It effectively seals the teak, blocking any natural oils or tannins from bleeding through and creating a rock-solid bond for the subsequent coats.

To achieve a finish that looks like it came straight from the factory, we utilised the Graco 495 XT paint sprayer. This state of the art equipment delivers consistent pressure and atomisation to make flawless results.

Following the adhesion primer, we applied an undercoat of Isolac Aqua Primer to build the film thickness and ensure a perfectly smooth base.

For the topcoat, we chose ISOLAC-AQUA ECO SATIN. This is a new-generation, eco-friendly enamel that offers exceptional durability and scratch resistance, vital for windows that see regular use. The result is a stunning, uniform satin sheen which has totally transformed the windows
